How To Stop Overthinking Exams
Some people enjoy exams, but I'm not sure if they will find their way to reading this blog post. For those who do not particularly enjoy exams, sitting each exam once is probably enough, yet when feeling anxious or nervous about an exam (or any upcoming event) the mind tends to imagine doing it over and over again – especially playing and replaying everything that might go wrong. By the time you get to the real exam, you have already sat the worst versions of it over and over so not as fresh as you would like to be.
This is a form of self-hypnosis. As soon as your mind conjures a scenario such as a stressful exam, the body tenses or starts sweating and you begin to experience the conjured scenario as if it is really happening. The imagination becomes real. And so your mind goes to work trying to fix the problem, but it cannot fix it because the exam is not really happening – it is just a thought of the exam and you end up going round and round in circles while experiencing that thought as reality.
Your mind needs to go to the exam in order to plan, but it does tend to fixate on all the things that might go wrong. If the mind simply imagines it going smoothly it is a lot less likely to keep coming back to those thoughts and when it does the experience will not be stressful.
And so overthinking happens because you are experiencing worst-case scenarios as real and trying to fix something that is not really happening. The best way to stop this is to understand the illusionary nature of your thinking, so you can teach your brain that it is a thought not reality, that thought poses no threat to you, so your body does not respond with a stressful reaction, leaving you clear to direct your thoughts to useful studying and preparation, and essential rest and relaxation.
This hypnotic audio will teach you all this and help you stop overthinking your next exam. It is on offer at a 50% discount until the end of May.
