      <image:caption>Trance is a narrowing of your focus, and in trance you can experience all sorts of phenomena: dissociation from your surroundings, regression to a younger age, amnesia, flash forwards in time, time distortion, confusion and negative or positive hallucination. All of these are trance states and can often be recreated with hypnosis. If you are considering hypnotherapy, then you are automatically using trance in a way that is unhelpful somewhere in your life. For example, if you experience performance anxiety: You narrow your focus on the possibility of embarrassing yourself. You flash forward in time and imagine yourself doing exactly that. You then feel that embarrassment as if it is actually happening to you now, or perhaps you age regress back to an earlier experience when you were embarrassed and re-experience those feelings now. In that moment, you forget that you are actually very capable and nothing has gone wrong since that incident. While in that trance state, you are experiencing the imagined as real. In this case, it is a protection strategy running on automation, but all you are consciously aware of is anxiety. It is therefore my job, with your help, to either hypnotise you and give you new and more productive automated trance states, or to help you wake up from that narrow focus on the possibility of embarrassment, so that you can prepare for the event with access to all your inner resources regardless of what might have happened in the past.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I hope the explanations above help you understand that you experience hypnotic phenomenon regularly. During our first session, I will try some hypnotic party tricks with you, such as sticking you to the chair or inducing name amnesia. You may or may not respond strongly to these suggestions, which are entirely imagination-based. If you do not respond strongly to imagination-based suggestions, then narrowing your focus onto emotion or memory will usually work. Even if you do not respond strongly to an external hypnotist, I hope that you understand now that you are ‘hypnotising yourself’ in order to cause the issue that you need help with. That means that I can use many other methods to ‘un-hypnotise’ you. This involves helping you see through the illusion of your own thinking and feeling process so that you are no longer swept away by it. You will not get the same approach from every hypnotherapist. I have been Venue Manager for two major Arthouse Cinemas in London—Curzon Soho and Curzon Mayfair—and I managed Health &amp; Safety for their five sites while I was there too. After returning to Worthing, while training in Hypnosis, I worked coaching long-term unemployed people to improve their chances of getting back into work. In this role, I taught confidence, CV writing and interview techniques as well as assisting my clients in their job searches. I have also worked for the charity Victim Support, helping victims of crime with the aftermath. I am now a full-time therapeutic hypnotist.       <image:caption>This is the subtle, confusing reality of unresolved trauma. Not necessarily the movie version with constant dramatic flashbacks or collapsing-to-your-knees kind of trauma, just the quiet, persistent echoes woven into your nervous system, shaping your reactions, long after the original troubles have gone. What is trauma? Here’s the thing about trauma: It isn’t about the events in the past themselves - it’s about the meaning your mind has made of them. Arguments, violence, abuse, loneliness, instability, emotional unpredictability, bullying, excessive pressure…Your nervous system adapted. It learned to brace, to scan, to predict, to hold itself together. It learned to be alert in ways that made perfect sense at the time. And now, months or years later, those same strategies show up when you don’t need that same protection anymore, and it makes your world feel scary or unsettled, even though there is no danger: Feeling tense for no reason Expecting something to go wrong. Difficulty relaxing, even with people you love. Hesitating to trust, open up, or rely on others. Compulsive people pleasing. Feeling like you’re “too much” or “not enough”.       <image:caption>Why does your head fill with the imagined judgement of others, crowding out your own thoughts? It’s weird, because you’re likeable enough. You’re not antisocial. You’re not lacking humour, intelligence, or warmth. You just feel… exposed. It's almost like every social moment is a test you didn’t study for—despite the fact that you often pass it fine. Your friends like you. Your partner loves you. People think you’re solid, capable, and friendly. But inside? It feels like you’re constantly managing some invisible threat that's probably not actually there...but it could be. What is social anxiety? Social anxiety is not a fear of what others are thinking, it is a fear of what you are thinking others are thinking. At some point, growing up, you learned to scan for danger – emotional danger, arguments, unpredictability, criticism, bullying…Your nervous system adapted. It got good – too good – at reading between the lines. Now, in adulthood, your body reacts even when the room is safe. Heart racing, stomach tightening, tension surging, mind scrambling? The urge to run – or freeze – takes over before you can stop it? It’s embarrassing. It’s confusing. It makes you feel like you’re being hijacked by your own nervous system. These are the common 'normal' phobias I see people for: Fear of flying. Fear of heights. Fear of spiders, snakes or dogs. Fear of public spaces. Fear of needles or medical procedures. Fear of driving, bridges, and tunnels. Emetophobia. Fear of vomiting or getting sick. Fear of crowds or confined spaces. The more unusual phobias I have seen people for are: phobia of flatulence, fear of hospitals, fear of buttons, fear of new food (ARFID), which gets its own page, and a phobia of sand. Underneath all of these and every other phobia? It’s the same pattern: experiencing fear when there is no present danger. What are phobias? Phobias aren’t about the thing itself, but the story your mind has made up about it - your imagination has become your reality. Phobias are a great example of (unhelpful) self-hypnosis. Imagine a party entertainer hypnotising a guest at a tea party to be scared of tea-cups. The guest at the party has been given an imagined idea – tea cups are scary – and that imagined idea is more real to them for the next ten minutes than the reality – tea cups are harmless. This is entertainment hypnosis which is funny for the audience, but it’s the same psychology as a phobia in real life which is not funny - the imagined danger is more real than reality. Once upon a time—often years ago—your mind misinterpreted a moment of overwhelm and tagged it as “danger.” Maybe a childhood scare. Maybe a stressful experience. Maybe something you barely remember. It might have just been something that was once said to you as a throwaway comment that wormed its way deep into your imagination. Ever since, the mind, trying to protect you, locked in a rule: “This thing = threat. Avoid it.” The problem is… that rule never got updated. So now, as an adult, your nervous system reacts instantly and intensely, long before your rational mind has a say. You know it doesn’t make sense. But phobias don’t run on logic. They run on story—an old story. An illusion of danger your mind experiences as real. The result? A life that shrinks in unexpected ways. Avoiding holidays. Avoiding lifts. Avoiding medical care. Avoiding opportunities. Avoiding embarrassment. Avoiding the fear of the fear itself. You lose freedom without ever choosing to. What therapy with me looks like We will perhaps uncover the invisible, subconscious story that created the fear and update it. We help you experience the illusion of fear, to see the story as a story instead of threat. Through imagination, hypnotic work, psychological illusion techniques, and thought experiments, we retrain the mind to recognise safety again. We separate the old emotional memory from the present moment. We help your nervous system stand down. We make the feared situation feel neutral instead of threatening.       <image:title>Defeat ARFID</image:title>
      <image:caption>If you eat selectively, there is nothing wrong with you; it is just that you have learned to fear trying new foods. You have subconsciously associated that feeling with unfamiliar foods. Fear is just a feeling; it is not real. You have put fear aside many, many times in your life, so you can learn to do it here as well. If that fear has been removed, then there is nothing stopping you from trying new foods, and you know what? You are not going to like all of them, but that's fine; no one is going to make you eat the ones you do not like, but you are going to like some of them, and suddenly your life will get more interesting, your health will improve, and at least one stressor will disappear from your life. It doesn’t matter how long you have eaten selectively, the fear can be put aside very quickly, leaving you to start making up your own mind about each food – the taste and the texture – instead of fearing disgust, nausea, being sick or your own gag reflex before you've had a chance to experiment. Life is about trial and error. You stop doing what you do not like and carry on doing what you do. We generally have a scientific approach to life, so what if I could help you put that fear aside, the way you have done in so many other situations in your life, often without thinking about it, so that you can eat scientifically? This is all that is required in ARFID treatment / SED treatment. During effective treatment for adults living with ARFID, or children, we will not focus on the food. We will focus on the fear. We will focus on the part of your mind that decided food is dangerous. We will focus on re-establishing a good relationship between that part of your mind and your more rational mind so you can work together instead of against each other. So that you can eat what you want because you want to. Treatment of children and adolescents with Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder is not about addressing fussy eating, but about nipping this fear in the bud before it becomes a lifetime of stress, anxiety and limitations. ARFID treatment centres can be very formal, but I see clients in a home office in Worthing, West Sussex. We will integrate the parts of your mind that are working against each other, and I will encourage you to bring some foods to try at the end of the second session - if you feel like it, which you probably will. Once the fear is successfully dealt with - allow three sessions - you will continue the rest of your ARFID treatment at home, which simply involves trying different foods at your own pace and bringing more variety to your meal times and flexibility to your social and eating habits. I am, of course, available for support along the way if you require. I have trained with Felix Economakis, who is a psychologist and hypnotist working in London, the country's leading therapist for ARFID / SED and known from the BBC program Freaky Eaters. He has developed a working process that he calls his 4Rs, and I am one of the few other therapists in the world now using the same process. This is not just hypnosis for treating selective eating disorders. We will use a mixture of conversation, imagination and hypnosis, which will vary from person to person, as although this is a specific way of working, it is very bespoke to each individual and extremely successful for adults, adolescents and children in most cases.
