If you experience phobic reactions then consciously you are fine, but you do have a subconscious problem. You may not know why you have a phobia, but at some point your subconscious mind has made up its mind to keep you away from your trigger at all costs. One of the most efficient ways to do this is to make you want to run away if you ever have contact or think about doing something that will bring you into contact with it. It is a great strategy if the threat was real but it is not.
A phobia feels real, but it is all in your imagination and therefore it is not something that you have to live with. Your subconscious has drawn an association between your something and danger but it is probably wrong about the perceived threat. You may have learned your phobia from someone influential while you are growing up or you may have learned it from an experience that you had which may or may not have been traumatic.
Your subconscious is not the most logical of processes and it may attach danger to the wrong thing. Koumpounophobia for example is the fear of buttons, but how many dangerous situations can you think of involving a button? I have a theory that this phobia comes from an individuals very young years when they were carried around a lot. At this age when something scary happens we all turned our heads into Mum or Dad's chest where there was quite probably a button or two. One really scary experience or several of them that all involved shouting, aggression or loud noises and......buttons! is enough for your subconscious to associate buttons with the fear from that point forwards. The fact this is a decision made in the subconscious means it is hard to consciously unlearn as you grow up.
So, a phobia is not real. It is an incorrect belief that your subconscious has formed, and in hypnosis a belief can be undone. Your subconscious just needs to change its association so that the trigger just becomes something innocent, or at least less threatening, leaving you to get on with expending your energy in more productive ways.
Even if the phobia is so severe that you cannot talk about it, there is a good chance that I can find a way reduce it so we can talk about it or remove it without ever referring to it directly.
